Mozambique

Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world. SolidarMed supports and trains medical staff in health centres and hospitals. We improve the dilapidated infrastructure and invest in innovative projects. For example faster patient transport.

A safe start

Mozambique's coast stretches 3000km along the Indian Ocean. Its health system - especially in the north of the country - is in a pitiful state. SolidarMed focuses on improving health care for mothers and children in this particularly poor region. We train health professionals in obstetric and newborn care. With our help, mothers and their newborns have access to life-saving emergency care, dramatically reducing their risk of death.

Mozambique in Numbers

  • Maternal mortality

    489 deaths per 100,000 births

SolidarMed in Mozambique

Maternal mortality in Mozambique is very high. In response, SolidarMed's projects focus on pregnancy, birth and family planning.

Caesarean sections and emergency transport

Currently, it is not possible to perform a caesarian section in the remote district of Namuno in northern Mozambique. SolidarMed supports the local authorities in planning and building an operating theatre, so that mothers have access to life-saving emergency care. This infrastructure improvement will benefit the entire population of this poor, rural district.

In a medical emergency, getting to a hospital quickly is essential. But there are hardly any functional ambulances in northern Mozambique. In response, SolidarMed is testing motorcycle and eBike ambulances as emerency transport systems. In a medical emergency, there is always a driver available to transport a patient to hospital for free. When not in use as an ambulance, the drivers use their vehicles as taxis to earn an income.

Meet Albertina. Taxi driver and ambulance service.

Expectant mothers with birth complications are transported to hospital for free.

Thanks to the motorbike ambulance, this expectant mother is promptly transported from her remote village to hospital.

In an emergency, Albertina is there. In the meantime, she earns her living as a taxi driver.

A small gift with a huge impact

Home births are common in Mozambique. Only half of pregnant women give birth under medical supervision. But in case of complications, the help of a midwife can make the difference between life and death for a mother and her baby. Every mother giving birth in a health centre receives a baby package. This simple gift, consisting of soap, a traditional baby wrapper and a small plastic tub, is proven to increase the number of births under medical supervision. This in turn reduces maternal mortality.

Our projects in Mozambique

SolidarMed is committed to improving the health of newborns, mothers and adolescents. We support the health authorities with a variety of initiatives to improve basic medical care in northern Mozambique.

Your donation is effective

With your valuable donation, we can build an operating theatre in the remote district of Namuno and ensure that births are safe. Your help allows us to give more people access to motorbike ambulances. And to invest more in the health of mothers and children. Thank you very much!
