Living with sickle cell anaemia

SolidarMed's partner organisation DAMKA improves the well-being and treatment compliance of children and adolescents living with HIV or sickle cell anaemia, as illustrated by the example of 21-year-old Fadhila Cheche.

Twenty-one-year-old Fadhila Cheche is living with sickle cell disease. After losing both parents, daily life became a struggle for Fadhila and her brother. Thanks to SolidarMed’s partner organisation DAMKA, she received community-based care, psychosocial support and access to free treatment. This stabilised her health and made a lasting improvement to her quality of life. Today, Fadhila feels stronger and more optimistic.

My life has improved. I now have access to the medicines I need and suffer far fewer pain crises.

Fadhila Cheche, 21-year-old

In 2025, DAMKA improved the well-being and treatment compliance of 989 children and adolescents living with HIV or sickle cell anaemia. Regular home visits and peer-led support ensured timely access to preventative and specialised services. Improvement is now in sight for newborns, too. A new project, in collaboration with “la Caixa” Foundation, is to roll out neonatal screening for sickle cell disease. This will promote early diagnosis and better treatment.
