In Memory of Dr. Edgar Paul Widmer

With the passing of Dr. Edgar Paul Widmer, SolidarMed loses a former Vice President and a committed bridge-builder who, for decades, dedicated himself with great passion to equitable healthcare and to fostering exchange between cultures and institutions.

With deep gratitude and respect we bid farewell to Dr. Edgar Paul Widmer, who played a key role in shaping the work of SolidarMed (then SKMV) from 1966 to 1987. As a doctor who served at St. Francis Hospital in Ifakara, he returned in 1965 to become a visionary and bridge builder between cultures, organizations, and worldviews.

Dr. Widmer was not only vice president of SolidarMed for 16 years, but also a committed networker on an international level and a driving force behind the idea of solidarity-based, global healthcare.

As a co-founder of Medicus Mundi Switzerland and President of Medicus Mundi Internationalis, he tirelessly advocated for medicine that is available to everyone – regardless of origin, status, or religion. His deep conviction that health is a human right and that modern, ethically grounded medicine must be accessible to all people defined his life's work.

We remember Edgar Widmer as a passionate advocate for "Health for All." His thinking and actions have had a lasting impact on the direction of SolidarMed. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and companions along the way.

The history of SolidarMed

SolidarMed has always been a child of its time. The first annual reports show the origins as a Catholic organisation in the 1920s. Since then, SolidarMed has undergone many transformations into the modern non-governmental organisation it is today. What has remained unchanged is our commitment to solidarity.
